CPOE: Lessons Learned in Community Hospitals [.PPT file - 1MB]
Although adoption of CPOE in community hospitals is still low, a growing number of hospitals that have succeeded have important lessons learned that can help to guide the efforts of others. Here is a focused look at how five community hospitals approached physician incentives, workflow, metrics, physician training, and management of clinical decision support. Information was obtained from the CPOE project manager or physician lead in five community hospitals with CPOE used in more than 80 percent of the hospital units and for at least 75 percent of all orders for inpatients. Independent community physicians also managed more than 50 percent of admissions.
The sponsor of the study, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC), aimed to provide practical information for hospitals in Massachusetts about to implement CPOE as part of the MTC-organized Massachusetts Hospital CPOE Initiative.
